Course Overview

 

World Telehealth Initiative (WTI) Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Tele-course is designed to strengthen healthcare providers’ knowledge, confidence, and practical skills in using point-of-care ultrasound to facilitate rapid diagnosis and improve patient care in underserved communities around the world. The course combines independent learning with interactive telehealth sessions focused on live simulation training and case-based discussion.

 

Course Format

 
 

The standard POCUS Tele-course is an eight-week training program, in addition to initial program and equipment setup. The course combines independent learning, live hands-on ultrasound training, real-time mentorship, and case-based discussion. WTI integrates Butterfly iQ handheld ultrasound probes directly with its telehealth devices, allowing remote clinical instructors to simultaneously see the trainee and their ultrasound images in real time. This enables instructors to guide scanning technique and image acquisition and provide immediate feedback while trainees practice at their own clinical sites.

Participants also learn to use the Butterfly iQ and Butterfly Cloud, including device and app navigation, image acquisition, saving and reviewing studies, and sharing scans for continued review and learning. The course is flexible and can be adapted or extended based on site-specific clinical needs, including additional training in priority areas such as ultrasound-guided vascular access or obstetric ultrasound.

Live sessions will be held every other week for approximately 90–120 minutes and will emphasize hands-on scanning, clinical case review, and practical application of POCUS. See below for the current training cohort course schedule details.

  • Dates: September 16, 2026 - November 11, 2026

  • Time: 7:30 AM Eastern Standard Time / 5:30 PM Bhutan Standard Time

    • *Week’s 1 & 2 will be held an hour later 8:30 AM EST / 6:30 PM BST

  • Session Length: Approximately 90–120 minutes

Materials & Resources

 
 

Prior to each session, participants are assigned short video lectures corresponding to the upcoming clinical topic. Participants also have access to Butterfly educational resources and guidance on using the Butterfly iQ, Butterfly app, and Butterfly Cloud throughout the course.

Equipment & Technology Setup
Before training begins, WTI works with the participating site to set up and integrate the Butterfly iQ handheld ultrasound with the WTI telehealth device. This integration allows remote instructors to simultaneously view the trainee and ultrasound images in real time during hands-on training.

 

  • This guide provides step-by-step instructions for connecting the Butterfly iQ ultrasound device with WTI’s Telehealth robots. Proper integration enables healthcare providers and remote instructors to view real-time ultrasound images while beamed into the robot from anywhere around the world to support hands-on POCUS training and future remote consultations.

    The Butterfly iQ can be integrated with both the Lite v3 and Lite v4.5 devices. Because the setup process differs slightly, please download and follow the Quick User Guide that corresponds with your site’s device.

  • Each participant will receive an email invitation from Butterfly to set up their provider account. Please activate your account and review the Butterfly iQ getting-started materials before the first training session. These resources will help you become familiar with the Butterfly platform, access Butterfly Cloud, and prepare to use the Butterfly iQ during training.

    • Provider Account Setup
      Look for an invitation email from support@butterflynetwork.com with the subject line indicating that you have been invited to join your site’s Telehealth Program. Follow the instructions in the email to create or activate your Butterfly account.

    • Butterfly Cloud
      Use Butterfly Cloud to access ultrasound studies that have been uploaded or saved during training. Studies can be accessed through the Butterfly app or online through Butterfly Cloud.
